Uses of Aluminum Compounds

by:Gladman      2020-09-01

Since aluminum is widely available and is quite economic to extract, it has several large scale applications.

Aluminium oxide (Al2O3)

Aluminum oxide and the derivative trihydroxides and oxy-hydroxides are extracted from minerals to a large degree. Most of this material is converted into metallic aluminum. The rest is used for other applications.

One of the major uses of aluminum is as an absorbent. It is used to remove water from hydrogen sulfide to sulfur in refineries. It is also used as a catalyst in the alkylation of amines.

Since alumina is a hard material, it is used as an abrasive and is also used in materials which need to withstand high pressure like pressure cookers and high pressure sodium lamps.

Aluminium sulfate (Al2(SO4)3(H2O)18)

Aluminum sulfate is produced in high quantities to be consumed in water treatment. It is also used in the manufacture of paper. It is used in fire extinguishers, as a food additive, in fireproofing etc. Further, it is used in leather tanning and as a mordant.

Aluminum ammonium sulfate ([Al(NH4)](SO4)2)(H2O)12, also called ammonium alum, is used as a mordant and in leather tanning. Aluminum potassium sulfate is also used as a mordant.

Aluminium chloride (AlCl3)

Aluminum chloride is used in the petroleum industry for refining processes. It is also used in the production and manufacturing of synthetic rubber and polymers. Aluminium chlorohydrate is used as a hardening agent and as an antiperspirant.

Other Compounds

Aluminium acetate, a salt used in solution as an astringent. Aluminium borate is used in the production of glass and ceramics. Aluminium fluorosilicate is used in the production of synthetic gemstones, glass and ceramic. Aluminium phosphate is used in the manufacture: of glass and ceramic, pulp and paper products, cosmetics, paints andvarnishes and in making dental cement. Aluminium hydroxide is used as an antacid, as a mordant, in water purification, in the manufacture of glass and ceramic and in the waterproofing of fabrics.
